*Official Thread* Anthem AVM 70 & 90 and MRX 540, 740 & 1140

Yes, in my case, I actually preferred the vanilla “stereo” over the Anthem Logic Music DSP.

Can you describe how the logic music sounds, that makes you prefer the regular stereo?

I have to preface by saying that I am using an external DAC - i.e. EverSolo DMP-A6 connecting to my MRX 1140. Even w/o EverSolo, I still prefer Stereo. Sound is subjective, it is hard to quantify into words as I am not an audiophile. I will not dig a rabbit hole and fall into it :stuck_out_tongue: My love still centres on movies.

As for multi-channel surround formats like SACD 5.1 or DTS-CD 5.1, I chose MPCM or DSU and DTS Neural:X respectively.

I see, no worries I’m not such an obsessed audiophile.

For me, DSU for obvious reasons without the center spread, just changes the presentation too drastically. Everything becomes mostly center channel, not nice for stereo.

I have been doing more testing in stereo, and the one thing that really strikes me about Logic Music is I really cannot tell that it is on…

The only way I know what Logic Music is actually doing is by turning off the front LR power amp, then I can hear the 4 surrounds playing music. Hence my question if the Atmos is engaged as well. Guess I will find out soon…

And the sub as well. I tried one setting with the mains run full range specifically for stereo, so there is no bass management.

With Logic Music, there is bass sent to the subs as well, to go with the 4 surrounds.

So how does it really sound? With careful listening and switching back and forth, I can barely tell that the bass seems stronger. The primary center image, vocals, or instruments etc, sounds a tiny bit more forward in the stage, and just that little extra bloom and presence.

That’s is. Without any AB I cannot tell them apart. Even during AB I have to frequently check the app to see which one I’m listening to.

To me, that is the hallmark of an excellent upmixer, both from a user perspective, as well as from a technical perspective, psycho acoustics to enhance the acoustic space…

Imagine, that’s why we use diffusers in the listening environment. But they are order of magnitude lower energy.

The surrounds output significant energy, yet they are barely noticeable with the mains playing. They are like active acoustics diffusers in the room. That is just so cool to the geek in me.

Hahaha.

Went to e77, inquiry avm 70. Hmm should i buy anthem over marantz 8015. Big different price.
Do ur tink big different on sound?

Hahaha, the AVM90 is the best processor I have ever experienced.

The audio transparency is very good, I don’t feel I’m loosing transparency or resolution listening to stereo with the AVM90 vs a stereo dac. With the benefits of ARC correction and bass management over stereo dac, it’s a very nice solution.

So that transparency and sound quality is brought to all the channels in a HT playback.

That means the real limitation now becomes the source material… I find myself looking for good sounding mixes and movies, these are a treat to experience.
Mediocre mixes and soundtrack quality also become apparent, like listening to average pop recording vs a high quality audiophile recording.

Slowly but surely working to get atmos up and running. New job a lot of travels, slowed my work down…

I think that’s what everyone is waiting for, haha to visit and hear the setup…

I talkin avm 70, avm 90 another issue price way way higher. But does it a lot in sound different between these 2?

I believe you have a copy of my latest AVDisco Demo Sampler from bro Wind? You can “sample” those clips which I have curated to test drive your “new” setup.

There is a discerning difference based on many reviews. If you are only into movies, AVM 70 is more than enough.

Yes. Anthem’s ARC will sound better since Marantz 8015 still using the vanilla Audyssey MultEQ XT32 as their default RoomEQ. If you really want Marantz, then go for the latest model with Dirac Live.

Yes I do! Also really enjoying the first AVdisco compilation as well! Thanks!

Hi to all Anthem owner, can i check for MRX 540 alone can be run as in 3.1.2?
Because i try to search there is no info, appreciate your help😀. And also will add a power amp for LR.

Yes, you can. The MRX 540 can support speaker layout of up to 5.1.2. For height channels, it will require an external power amp by connecting to the Height Pre-out.

I see, which mean for need to add a amplifier.
So how about 740? My item is 3.1.2, adding a amplifier only for my left&right. I can’t have surround at the moment, only left, right, centre and a upfiring atmos speaker front.

MRX 540 should suffice since it already has built-in amplifier for Left, Centre and right channel. You just need to get a 2-channel or 4-channel power amp to power up your L & R (if you really prefer to stick with external amp to power up your L & R) and also power up your height speakers. Take note, both MRX 540 & 740 have paralleled LFE outputs. The only time you go for MRX 740 is for the extra amplification power of 140W vs 100W for the MRX 540.

Ok noted, thank for your information ray😀

It has been awhile since there is a beta release for the ARC s/w. Now here’s the new ver 1.9.2 just released by Anthem. It appears that there is a ver 1.8.4 beta that has never been released prior to ver 1.9.2. Those having issue with the distance may want to give ver 1.9.2 a try.

Take note that the stable version remains to be 1.7.4.
