*Official Thread* Anthem AVM 70 & 90 and MRX 540, 740 & 1140

I’m a bit confused. When did you purchase the 740? As far as I know, the 8K HDMI board wasn’t released until late 2021 or later. Based on the board, I can’t tell whether it is a 4K or 8K board. The simplest way to verify is to check the MCU version in the WEBUI. If the MCU Version number starts with HD.XX/XX.XX, then it is an 8K board. Anything else would be a 4K board. Mine is a 4K board since I purchased it before the 8K board was available.

I strongly urge you to get in touch with your dealer to perform the board replacement.

Hi! I would like to ask you for help with manual correction of ARC file (previously I met that some people sent the file for correction) or advice for better manual correction. Martin Logan ElectroMotion ESL front speakers, as you know with this kind of speakers it is very important to have the right position and listening position, so the question arises - is the calibration correct or not? There are also questions about the subwoofer, I would like to understand whether what I got is the maximum or can be better.

You can send me the arc file to take a look. Check your PM.

Thank you! I’ve sent the file to your e-mail.

I will take a look over the weekend.

I just took a look at your arc file and it appears that your system-wide target level was >80dB. This is not ideal. You should bring it down to the reference target level of 75dB.

Do a couple of things here to get this corrected first.

* First, select an Input that has an Analog output.
* Next, use the Quick Measure feature to get the subwoofer level in check. Before you begin, make sure "ARC On" checkbox is unchecked. The reason your system-wide target level is not 75dB (reference) is because your subwoofer gain was set "too high". This is evidenced by ARC reducing the overall subwoofer level by -7dB. While the test tone is playing, check to ensure the level hovers between 66dB to 75dB but pay careful attention to ensure that the "highest" peak not exceeding 80dB.
* Once the above is done, re-do your ARC. Re-send me the arc3 file again and I'll take a look at it.

Purchased the AVM 740 in November 2023 along with an 8k separate board.

You need to get back to your dealer who sold you the unit since it is still under warranty. When it comes to the replacement of the board, it will be better for the dealer to install the board.

Haha…this chap buy, sell and then buy the same model again. A testament of what ARC brings to the home theatre and hi-fi.

Hello,

I’ve been enjoying my music with Anthem Logic Music upmix recently.

Wondering if it also sends sounds to the height speakers in addition to the surrounds? Can anyone help verify?

Thanks!!

Bro, I am surprised to learn that you are using AnthemLogic-Music DSP for your music up mix. Any reason why you think Anthem’s DSP is better? BTW can I check the source content is 2 channel or multi-channel like SACD/DSD? If the content is 2 channel, I would suggest that you stick to Dolby Surround Upmixer (DSU). It is imo the best in umpiring music where even heights will be engaged for that enveloping effect.

From comparisons, anthem Music is far more subtle, to the point that I almost can’t tell it’s running.

DSU on the other hand is quite obvious, and for nicely mastered music, a bit too much change to the sound. DSU also uses the center channel, while Anthem music does not.

That’s why I was wondering if Anthem music also sends info to the height channels.

From a theory perspective, I suspect Anthem music may be very similar to Harman Logic 7, which is based on the research of Griesinger. Have read that Logic 7 is still one of the best upmix, a bit sad that I haven’t been able to experience it.

Theoratically, the processor can send an attenuated and delayed sound to the surrounds for ambience. That seems to be what Anthem Music is doing.

I used to like DSU, they are likely very similar based on the research. Just preferring the subtlety of Anthem for now.

Hehe, long answer.

Interesting…I don’t really like the AnthemLogic-Music upmix, I go for stereo for 2 channel. I seldom use DSU these days to upmix 2 channel music. DSU mainly used for movies

My comments regarding anthem Music vs DSU are purely for 2ch stereo.

I find that Anthem music just very subtlely enhances the soundstage, width, depth.

Also provides more envelopement, which are terms they use in the literature to describe the sound being in the room and enveloping the listener.

A large part of these research is mainly focused on orchestra type music and the acoustics and envelopement of concert halls. It requires large spaces for the late arrival (more than 10-30ms) diffuse room reflected energy to return to the listener and provide that sense of space.

Using the side and rear surrounds, and the height speakers for that matter, is a perfect opportunity to create the envelopement around the listener with ‘active’ room sound and appropriate delays to convey a sense of size and space that cannot be achieved passively with acoustic treatment.

Though SMT wing diffusers comes very close, and imo this is the mechanism of why they work so well.

For movies yea no doubt DSU is very nice. Any legacy 5.1 tracks I confirm use DSU…

A bit sad that Anthem Logic Movies seem to only be limited to 2ch sources. Cannot upmix anything that is 5.1 or more.

Would have strongly considered a JBL synthesis processor or AVR if the new Harman Logic 16 is released… But it seems to have completely gone quiet…
It seems all the Samsung driven layoff has completely decimated any remaining organizational expertise in that area… :sob:

The other thing to wait for on the DSP front is DTSX Pro on Anthem… But now looking at my room layout, I’m not sure I can fit a wide speaker… Didn’t place the entrance door correctly, it is exactly at the left wide location

So far the mains and the side surrounds seem to be able to reach each other well. So it’s not a high priority currently.

Talking about DTSX Pro, and now looking to start building atmos, is the 4 vs 6 atmos conundrum.

Bryan just shared from Avsforum, waveform analysis. This is the very popular Top Gun Maverick.

The bottom 3 pairs are top front, top middle and top rear respectively.
And front wide just above them.

Conspicuously,

  • hardly any front wide
  • hardly any top fronts and top rears.
  • majority of atmos content rendered on top middle.

I wonder if this is because this is a ‘static’ atmos ‘bed’ track that consists of 7.1.2 track?

And interesting the .2 static atmos track is just rendered to top middle in a 6 atmos layout.

Wonder how it is rendered on a 4 atmos layout? Just static across both front and back tops, like how DSU also upmix to .2 tops?

Also, Center channel is the 3rd row and LFE is 4th.

No kidding that center channel is the most important channel in HT.

For this movie, looks like center channel is working hard!!

Based on sources reported by one of the AVSforum members, Anthem is working to release DTS X Pro soon and Roon will be following closely. Most likely by this year, Anthem would drop these 2 much-awaited features since its inception 3 years ago.

I thought Bryan using Phantom channel these days?

I have such high hopes for this movie but it is a letdown, a missed opportunity. There is very little activity in the heights. Even the bass is so-so only. Tom’s latest Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1 has better sound mix.

Greetings.
A friend of mine has an MRX-1140 and ran into a problem while calibrating after buying a new subwoofer.
The problem is that when he starts calibrating there are no TEST-TONE sounds from the speakers.
The receiver is updated to the latest version of both the receiver and the calibration system.
We reset the system and there are still no test sounds from the speakers.
Everything is set up properly.
I would love to get help.
Thank you.
