@kennyluck2000 setup is in fact one of the better setup I’ve heard. And it doesn’t cost an arm and leg. A clear distinction of knowing what’s one want and another who does not.

I don’t need any one to thinks my setup is good… some will like some will not like… but i thinks it is ok for anyone to dislike me… i live my life, i don’t give a pen to someone to write my life. Life is unpredictable… if you can’t be happy with me… that is you issue… Enjoy your HT/HiFi journey…

If someone prefers @kennyluck2000 set up that shows that your preference fall more towards his preference and it doesnt mean that what other people prefer is wrong. Honestly i have many comments but I dont publish those things in the public forums about any individual preferences. If I do so, then there is something wrong in me. We must always find positivity on what people are trying to achieve and not the negetivity thats not healthy.

People who know me they know my character… some good some bad and some just ok… each has their own opinions… i don’t live on people’s opinion. That’s life… anyway and anyhow you are the HT/HiFi Expert le… why bother with my comment.

@HIFI-AV-EXPERT It’s sad that you closed your mind and did not appreciate feedback. Especially feedback from someone who knows better and have been generous to you.

@HIFI-AV-EXPERT start a new discourse to rant.

Instead i will share with him face to face when i meet him. But again in my opinion only so I may be wrong from my feedback. So its honestly our own preference. Honestly everyone has their own limitations, some has money to spend no WAF, some has money and no proper room. Some has limited budget for HIFi but have a bigger house. So many factors and etc etc. So just stay happy and live with what we can achive from what we have.. Everyone is different and even our own fingers are not the same!

I hope you can enjoyed your HT/HiFi journey… if one can’t take criticism don’t share here… or learn to take in a lot criticism… sometimes true honesty comments really can hurt one feeling if it is negative… some people concerns about others feelings they will just give positive comments…
Actually my system are suck la bro…
Your is better than mine the last i have heard…

This is my first Anthem avr. After playing for 3 weeks, I have to say I’m very satisfied with it. I benefited a lot from the forum and it’s time for me to share my experiences as a return. If I shared anything wrong, please do not hesitate to point them out so I can improve further.

My simple 7.3.4 system setup (different speakers drive by different amps probably explains the huge volume delta for different speakers post ARC Calibration):
LCR: Dynaudio Focus 220/200C by Emotiva XPA-3
Surround/Atmos: Anthony Gallo Micro (Surround L/R by Emotiva UPA-1; Surround Back by 740 back; Front Height by 740 Front LR and Rear Height by 740 Surround)
Sub: 2xSVS SB16
Actuator: Crowson
Two subs and Crowson connected through miniDSP 2x4HD to Anthem 740

My experiences:

  • you can find Anthem related documents here, including manual. I think it’s a good habit to spend some time reading manuals prior to work on the setups (particularly if it’s your first time using the brand), the answers to a lot of common questions you may ask can be found in manuals.

  • Before I started my ARC calibration, I level aligned my two subs, followed by phase alignment, I think this video (posted in this thread already but I put the link here for bros’ easy reference) gives very detailed step by step guide on how to do it so I will not put them in words. The phase alignment result is here:

if you are interested to know How to Calibrate your Subwoofers with REW & miniDSP, and How to Create & Apply a House/Room Curve, you can refer to this video, it’s very relevant as the guy is using Anthem too.

  • In my first run, I actually tried to create a house curve with miniDSP, but ARC flattened the curve every time as expected (as shown below):

Although I can raise subwoofer’s Minimum Correction Frequency up to 50Hz or even higher to regain the house curve (confirmed by REW), but decided not to, as later I found Anthem is capable to give me sufficient ultra low frequency and together with BEQ, I have sufficient ultra low frequency effects. You can also see there is a valley around 65-80Hz but since there are limited locations I can place my subs, and I almost tried all locations but none are perfect, so I have to live with it for the time being.

  • Over the past weeks, I have tried different ARC Calibration methods, including X and M pattern, and eventually I used M pattern as my seats is just 60cm away from back wall, so M pattern makes more sense according to guide from ARC website, which I found extremely useful:

    • WHENEVER POSSIBLE, make sure the primary listening position is a minimum of two to three feet (60 to 90 cm) from walls and other large hard surfaces. Please note:
    • We understand that the location of the primary listening position is often not flexible.
    • For best results when listening, a listener’s ears should be away from any walls a minimum distance of two to three feet (60 to 90cm).
    • If the 1st mic position falls within two to three feet (60 to 90cm) form a wall, high-backed furniture, or similar obstructions, it’s important to measure from a position as close to the listener’s head as possible. So place the first mic position just in front of where the listener’s head would be. In this case, always place the 2nd through 5th positions the recommended distance from each other, even if this results in them being less than two to three feet (60 to 90cm) away from a wall. The resulting pattern may look less like an X and more like a V or M, and that’s okay.
  • I also strictly followed the 3D placement (which was repeatedly shared by other bros in the posts above).

    • WHENEVER POSSIBLE, place the 2nd through 5th positions two feet (60cm) from the 1st position. Up to three feet (90cm) is acceptable, but not usually necessary.
    • WHENEVER POSSIBLE, place the 2nd through 5th positions symmetrically around the 1st position. Use an X pattern, with the 1st position in the center of the X, and each corner two feet (60cm) from the center.
    • WHENEVER POSSIBLE, vary the mic height for the 2nd through 5th positions, with two measurements being 6 to 12-inches below the 1st position and the other two measurements 6 to 12-inches above the height of the 1st position. This method provides ARC with a more three-dimensional view of the room and its acoustic signature.
  • In the beginning I also tried to level align all speakers/subs after ARC Calibration with external pink noise (Atmos_7.1.4_-20dB.m2ts), purposely to calibrate the SPL to 75dB @-20dB for 740, but later I found it seems changed the ARC Calibrated sound signature, so I stopped doing that, I think the proper way is to lower down the volume in ARC software, re-calculate and upload to 740 again, but I didn’t try it as I’m very satisfied with sounds after ARC Calibration.

  • The only thing I dislike the results post ARC Calibration is: the sound is too bright to my ear (my wife also confirmed that). But that can be easily resolved with changes applied to advanced settings - System-Wide Target, I keep the original post ARC Calibration profile, and created 3 more: 1) -3dB; 2) -4dB and 3) -6dB Tilt Level, and I like the -6dB Tilt Level the most. But when you apply Tilt Level change, need to remember Maximum Correction Frequency for each channel also need to be raised above 5KHz, I extended them to 20KHz, though the default value is 5K and 500Hz is more recommended by Anthem.

  • I didn’t touch Room Gain but I tried different Deep Bass Boost between 0.5dB and 1dB, but 0dB gives me cleanest and sufficient deep bass so I decided not to touch this setting at all

  • So this is my final setting, after listening to 30+ demo clips, I’m really very happy with the sound now, bass is very punchy, clean and impactful, dialogue is clear and thick, sound stage is wide, with high frequency rolled off, it’s no longer harsh/bright.

  • To mention a bit more on the auto phase correction done by ARC, I did REW measurement by changing the phase of my sub, and confirmed what ARC auto phase alignment offers is the best alignment results. Unfortunately I forgot to save the REW measurement file so can’t share the graphs here.

I know my current results still have room for improvement, particularly the low frequency portion, however, since I’m very happy with the sound signature, I will pause a while and enjoy the system for a little bit longer first.

As mentioned in ARC guide, users tend to make changes right after ARC Calibration as there are many parameters to play around, however, ARC Calibration probably gives the best results (as long as you did a proper calibration). So do a proper Cal, listen to what it offers first, you may like the results after a short while and find it’s not necessary to make any changes, which is applicable to me, I did try different ways to change parameters after ARC Calibration in the past weeks, and still not satisfied with the results, however, after a proper ARC Calibration with latest firmware, I loved the sound instantly, and just need to make very minimum modifications (on the high frequency) to get the sounds suit me the best.

Hope my above sharing benefit some forum bros, please do share with me if I did anything improper so I can correct and improve the performance, cheers!
