Sony to cease production of blu-ray optical discs (in Japan Market)

After LG, now Sony…and Sony just annouced it is going to cease all optical drive production in Feb 25. This marks the end of an era for physical media. In retrospect, Sony won the 4K format war in 2006 with Toshiba’s HD DVD threw in the white towel. Now after more than 2 decades. Streaming dethroned the once popular blu-ray disc.

ps: It seems future AVDisco Demo project will no longer have physical media.

No way… I better stock up on a player…

Shikes. That’s not good…

hmmm… oddly, the Sony recordable discs that i come across in local market, seems to be “OEM” discs that are produced in Taiwan, no Jippun produce.
of course, back in Japanese market, Sony, together with other marques such as JVC and Panasonic, have their discs “Made in Japan/日本製”.

Whatever the case may be…it is sayonara to physical media. I bet it won’t be long physical disc will no longer be distributed by studios and all go straight to streaming platforms. With that, one will no longer able to “own” the title you paid for.

In a sudden twist, Sony clarified that it is stopping production in home country and not on a global scale.
